The maya covered a vast territory that stretched from parts of Honduras to the South of Mexico. The borders were quite diffuse, however, it is known that the city most west of all the mayan culture is Comalcalco, in the Mexican State of Tabasco.
This city is quite different from the typical architectural styles of other mayan cities, because to be built were used for bricks, this is due to the lack of presence of stone materials in the region.
Thanks to the emblem glyph found in the area know that the original name of the city was Joy Chan, who comes from the mayan language and whose meaning is Heaven Surrounded by Heaven or Rolled up.
The current name of Comalcalco was because when tribes of origin Nahuatl arrived in the area, the city of Joy Chan was uninhabited and see the buildings constructed of brick which is most similar to that found to describe it was the word ‘grill’, so he was called ‘Comalli-Calli-Co’, which means ‘Home of the comal’, hence the name of this mayan city is in nahuatl. ©️ Wikicommons
