This figurine is the best example preserved wood sculpture of maya during the Early Classic period (ca. 250-550 dC). It is said that he came from the border region between Guatemala and Tabasco, Mexico.
The notches are clearly defined in the skirt and under the arms would have contained a plate probably covered by a mirror mosaic pyrite or obsidian. The plate would have been inserted under the arms and then engaged in the notches of the skirt.
Facial hair is unusual, the bulbous forehead and the profile we show that this representation is of a person with dwarfism gene. In maya art, the dwarves were very special, they are attributed powers divinatory and were sought after artists in the royal courts.
The ‘bearer of the actual mirror’ was very important, since sometimes it was occupied by a woman, but more often by dwarves courtiers. Its main function was to reflect the image of the lords and ladies maya, in addition, the mirrors are also known as objects for divination in Mesoamerica. ©️ The image and information obtained from the MetMuseum, New York
