This is the top fragment of the stela 9 Piedras Negras. It became quite famous in recent years because I’ve never been located and was found in 2019 to be auctioned in France by the house ‘Million Drouot in Paris.
Stela 9 Piedras Negras was discovered by Teobert Maler in 1899, since then it knows that it was broken in three pieces and incomplete, precisely because the top fragment had already been looted.
The stela shows the ruler, Itzam K’an Ahk II, in the front position, and foot, wearing an outfit that is military sporting an impressive headdress shaped like an owl, in the centre of which is a visible glyph inverted puh “cane”, a symbol associated with Teotihuacan.
The government of Guatemala managed to stop the auction of this piece, and is currently in the process to your recovery
