The censers of Mayapan

The censers of Mayapan are truly unique in importance and technique. Beauty in details and conservation is wholly unique in all the maya area.

Researchers have determined that some of these censers in addition to representing mayan gods are also associated with deities in the center of Mexico, this product of a mixture of cultures that lived in the region during the postclassic.

Fray Diego de Landa describes the censers as containers for the burnt offerings of copal, a form of communication with the gods, but also could have played a role as ‘idols’ in ceremonies of the calendar.
