This beautiful figurine depicts a mother maya of the classic period (550-950 AD). Charging in the left side of a newborn baby, and in the right-hand side to a spider monkey (which seems quite playful).
The mother maya has a beautiful touch of blue pens (image 4), and in his left hand carries what appears to be a badge of a feathered serpent (image 5), which can give us the idea that he was associated to some divinity.
The figurine is also a whistle that is probably used in rituals obstetric, during lactation, or even in funerary rituals. We are fortunate that still retain several traces of its original color.
Comes from the region of High Verepaz in Guatemala and is part of the collection of Ancient American Art at the Denver art museum.
