This mask Olmec seems to have been quite revered and sacred to the mayas of the classical period.
The #Olmec predated the Maya and was settled mainly on the coast of the gulf of Mexico, however, this mask was found in Petén. It is believed that hundreds of years after it was created it was used as an object ancestral and sacred by the maya of Petén.
It is made of serpentinita (one of the stones toughest of mesoamerica) and to each side of the mouth has two glyphs olmecs. These glyphs are the first known writings in America, and a direct predecessor of the maya script.
Within the mayan culture, objects that accumulate accumulate sacredness, while the oldest is an object, the more sacred it becomes.
