The building that we now call ‘The Castle’, in the archaeological site of Tulum was of the utmost importance to the mayan sailors because it allowed them to avoid the dangers of the second largest coral reef barrier in the world.
The mayan sailors to arrive to Tulum, is led by the open sea alongside the coral reef, when viewed ‘The Castle’, which was illuminated by natural light or torches in the night, they knew the precise moment to turn their boats, so they avoided colliding with the reef while safeguarding the goods transported.
Thanks to its engineering, Tulum was a successful port during the Post-Classic maya. ©️ Wikicommons
