The Sistine Chapel of the maya

During the 2001 excavations of the archaeological site of San Bartolo, a team of archaeologists led by William Saturno (researcher of the department of archaeology at the Peabody Museum, Massachusetts) found at the base of a pyramid was a room with several murals in a very good state of preservation, their astonishment was such that they described the place as ‘the Sistine Chapel of the maya’. It is known that the murals were made in the year 100 bce. Which makes the murals maya discovered more ancient.
In the publication we can see a detail of the mural on the North which describes a ritual in front of a cave on a mountain; several people are kneeling and walking on a snake long. The maya maize god is shown at the center of a group of men and women getting a tree of calabazo.
This is especially significant as the corn, and squash were the basis of the power of maya, the wall may mean the sacred were these two foods. ©️ Pictures in high resolution of the magazine archaeology mexican
