In the photo we can see an ajq’ij Itza performing a ceremony for the spring equinox, in Uaxactún, Petén. Although today marks a solstice, and not an equinox, took the opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of the practitioners of the faith maya, who care for and preserve the knowledge of the mayans.
The ajq’ij is the advisor and accountant of the days, the one who observes the stars, and know his influences. Ajq’ij is a common term in all maya languages and can be translated into Spanish as the union of two meanings: Aj —he or she who knows, handled, or knows something— and q ij —day, sun—
Currently, there are several hundreds of people in Guatemala and Southern Mexico who practice the maya spirituality and hold ceremonies on sacred days, as it is today.
The photographs are of the mind @nopongominombre, are especially important due to the language group Itza is being reduced, and at present there are a few itza-speakers.
